New Safety Information-Cleveland

November 1, 2008

A recent spate of LGBT directed assaults in Cleveland's west side produced an LGBT-center sponsored town-hall meeting in response.  The meeting was attended by a large number of Cleveland City Council representatives, a Council-person at large from adjoining Lakewood and over 100 interested citizens from Cleveland and surrounding areas.

The meeting was less than satisfactory in two ways- it ignored anti-trans violence (including a murder and assaults on AO meeting attendees, and most recently ex-AO president) and it paid short shrift to the notion of visitor safety versus resident safety.  Since Cleveland Bars, Night Clubs and other entertainment venues draw people from surrounding communities and bring needed revenue in Cleveland, something more proactive than the unenforceable idea that the business venues should notify their customers of potentially unsafe conditions was hoped for.

What was useful from the Town-Hall meeting was some literature on safety that I've scanned and made available here.  The files are somewhat large, and they are often folded brochures.  They may also need to be rotated to read well on your computer screen.
